“The
heat’s on!” Without an awareness of various forms of resistance that create friction, even convictions of substance placed in motion can fall short of their destinations. Momentum is lost. These universal forms of friction are expressed uniquely in our lives and are in addition to present day challenges shared in Part II. To identify the kinds of collisions that can take place between convictions and various elements in a particular atmosphere, we return to examples in specific arenas of life. I Sense Some Friction! Family. For a parent, an identified conviction can be the focus on family through growing relationships. The conviction itself is in order, founded on core beliefs and values, and filtered through personal maturity. In this case, the placement of the conviction into motion meets considerable resistance, equivalent to a wall, from a rebellious teenager. Resistance is built to a level that creates enough friction to halt the forward motion of the conviction. This barrier to impact is the type of resistance that infiltrates the entire atmosphere within the home and results in heated exchanges. Vocation. For another individual, an identified conviction is the clear and open sharing of information in the workplace. The placement of this conviction into motion remains partial until there is resolution of a recurring disconnect that impedes interoffice communication and impacts the effectiveness of the sales force. The resistance in this atmosphere comes from two individuals who will pass along only a bare minimum of information; therefore, creating a high level of friction. The amount of friction does not stall the movement of the initial conviction completely, but it greatly impedes its motion, and is manifested in groans of frustration.
