“I
just can’t get things going.” Convictions with substance are only half the challenge. The other half of the necessary motivation involves the presence of passion - the personal force required to put convictions into action. “Let’s get moving!” We can identify convictions derived from our beliefs, values, and personal maturity. However, just because we clarify our wills does not mean our lives start to move in a focused manner. As in the physical universe, without the presence of an accelerating force, we will have a natural tendency to allow our convictions to remain unexpressed. Consider the totality of the property of inertia. Inertia itself is neutral, but it can assist in supporting activity or inactivity. The Needed Push Remember that we are sharing a universal law. In a weightless environment, the obstruction of gravity’s force is removed. Objects that lack any force to accelerate them will float without continuous motion in any one direction. For example, an astronaut in flight writes some observations with a pen. When she releases the pen from her grip, it remains floating at her side. Apply force to the pen?for example, launch it with a throwing motion?and it will continue in motion, maintaining its speed and direction in a straight line. A harmless writing implement now transforms into a mini-missile. In addition, the density of the released object will greatly determine the force of its impact when something intercepts it. This is why it is important not to merely have convictions, but to have convictions of substance. |
